Trying the "Show Me Your Melons" Cocktail!

Trying the "Show Me Your Melons" Cocktail!

I came across his recipe by Lui Fernandes (YouTuber) and just had to try it! I made mine as a mocktail as I am still waiting for this baby to make her arrival, but I will also include the original recipe below.

This drink is delicious and a beautiful example of using ingredients that are in season! I have tried growing melons for the last 3 years. The first year was a bust, last year I got one small watermelon, and this year even with much neglect I have a melon currently growing in the garden! I am already looking forward to what I can try and grow in the garden next year!

Using honey dew juice was very unique and interesting. I do not prefer my drinks really sweet and if I made this again I think I could cut back on some of the sugar Lui calls for. However, I would be interested to see how the tequila would balance with the sweetness he adds, but as a mocktail I would probably cut the sugar he adds to the juice and just add a 1:1 honey simple syrup and give that a try! However, if you like sweet things, make it just as the recipe calls for below!

Show Me Your Melons -cocktail (by Lui Fernandes) Serves: 1
Prep Time: 20 minutes
Total Time: 25 minutes Ingredients:

  • 1 honey dew melon

  • white sugar

  • 1 jalapeno

  • 4-5 mint leaves (plus 1 mint sprig for garnish)

  • honey

  • 0.75 ounce of lemon juice

  • 0.5 of dry sherry (check out my sherry alternative in the mocktail recipe if you don’t have sherry at home)

  • 2 ounces tequila blanco

  • ice

Equipment:

  • Muddler (or the back of a spoon)

  • Cocktail shaker

  • Jigger or measuring tool

  • Shaker tin and strainer

  • Cocktail Skewer

Instructions:

  1. ( Cut out 2 small melon balls for garnish first ) Make the honey dew juice, by seeding, cutting, and juicing the honey dew melon. Lui uses a vegetable juice. I used my Vitamix blender and then strained the pulp with a cheese cloth. Either will work! Then mix 2 parts juice with 1 part white sugar.

  2. Muddle one slice of jalapeno in your shaker tin.

  3. Add 4-5 mint leaves to the shaker and 1 ounce of honey dew juice, 0.5 ounce of 2:1 honey simple syrup, 0.75 ounce of lemon juice, 0.5 ounce of a dry sherry, and 2 ounces of a blanco tequila.

  4. Add ice and shake it up!

  5. Double strain into a high ball glass.

  6. Add crushed ice.

  7. Garnish with a mint sprig and 2 melon balls on a skewer. We recommend these gold cocktail skewers that we think are so beautiful!
